21 of 22. Win three straight elimination games. Sweep the first seven playoff games.
Has there ever been a winning streak quite like that of the 2007 Rockies?
The 1916 New York Giants hold the major league record for length of winning streak--26 games--but that was during the middle of the season. They actually wound up finishing fourth, if you can imagine that. (The 2002 Oakland A's won 20 in a row. The 1906 White Sox and 1947 Yankees won 19. But again, these were not season-ending streaks.)
The 1935 Chicago Cubs have the second longest streak. They won 21 games right at the end of the season to clinch the pennant, then lost two games, then lost the World Series to the Tigers. The 1977 Royals might be a closer match. They won 16 in a row, lost a game, then won another 8 straight. They finished their last 8 games at 3-5, then lost to the Yankees in the ALCS.
In a bit different context, the Boston Red Sox' eight-straight victories in 2004, after being down 0-3 to the Yankees in the ALCS, probably ranks as the greatest come-back of all time. There's a difference, though, between a great come-back and a late-season winning streak that runs through the playoffs, which is what the Rockies have done. We literally have never seen the like.
