Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) frozen out of GOP convention because he investigates "evangelists"

Or so says Robert Novak, who has especially good sources among Republicans.  "Mr. Novak suggested the decision was in retribution for Mr. Grassley...investigating some prominent televangelists, a suggestion that was denied by party leaders."

It sounds right though.  Even though Iowa is a center-left state, the GOP there is pretty much run by social conservatives.  Pat Robertson won the Iowa GOP primary in 1988.  Mike Huckabee won there this year.

They don't care too much whether or not televangelists are crooks because, even if they are, at least they're our crooks, and, in the battle against Satan and the liberals, they feel that minor sins, like conspicuous consumption of ill-begotten wealth, is a small price to pay for an ally.
