Chris

Bravo! Well said.

I've also gripped about these forums (Compassion Forum and now Saddleback) over on my blog.

Diane Roth

great! and I like the post title, too. Sorry I didn't watch the event. I really missed something.

John Petty

Yeah, Chris, we think alike on this one--in fact, just about everything except Obama/Clinton. :)

Diane, I didn't watch the event either, but did read several press accounts. As Joan Walsh at salon.com put it, Obama was "sandbagged at Saddleback."

I did watch the "debate" "conversation" - most of it. It was so achingly painful, I had to change the channel. Watching a young, robust, McCain answer questions forthrightly and directly and an old, wizened, Obama uh, er, uh, uh, uh, er, uh,er, his way through, was unbearable.

All was not lost, however, because what I thought was bumbling and stumbling was described in various blogs as "nuanced", "thoughtful"and "intelligent"and anyway McCain "cheated". Phew...I was wrong AGAIN!

Then ever to the rescue, (unless your name is Clinton), Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday, 08/17/08, that Obama was "a leader that God has blessed us with at this time."

Well, I feel better - how about you?

This is the mysterious aspect of American politics for me. Do you think that as the ranks of the unchurched grow, these public displays of piety will go away?

(If a candidate tried this in Canada it would be their kiss of death.)

John Petty

The reviews are in, and Obama didn't fare that well. Actually, I think Rick Warren sandbagged him. Beware of baptists bearing gifts!

Dan, the "God stuff" is a dogwhistle for conservative evangelicals. Most of the rest of the country rolls its eyes.

toujoursdan:

Unfortunately, no, public displays of piety from political candidates will not be going away any time soon as long as the "churched" are dependable, vocal, voters, they will be pandered to.

I am from the UK and this aspect of American politics has puzzled me also. Tony Blair's death knell was sounded not only because of his Iraq decision in the face of the public opposition, but also because of his increasingly public affirmation of his religious beliefs, which the British believe should be kept out of politics.
