So says Christianity Today. I'm guessing the phrase no longer market tests very well, if it ever did. Some in the religious right would prefer to be called "socially conservative evangelicals," but admit that that hardly trips off the tongue, and doesn't include social conservatives who aren't evangelicals. Evangelicals seemed to like being called "religious right" when they were winning, but it doesn't seem to look so good right now.
They could take another approach. Rather than staying the same and switching labels so as to appear more moderate, maybe they should try keeping the label and switching their attitudes and tactics to be more moderate. As Steve Benen puts it, "If the movement's leaders believe 'religious right' has become synonymous with extremism and hatred, perhaps the movement should be less extreme and hateful."
