In a special election, former Speaker of the House Denny Hastert's district, once thought to be "safe Republican," elected a Democrat, Bill Foster. Bush received 55% of the vote in this district in 2004. Hastert was elected easily for two decades. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.) called the race "the shot of change heard around the world."
