The Vatican had a $14 million deficit this year on revenues of $372 million, which sounds like a lot, but is only about four times bigger than the expense of the Chicago headquarters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The deficit, after three straight years in the black, was caused mainly by the decline of the dollar on the world currency markets.
Peter's Pence, the worldwide collection to help defray Vatican expenses, raised over $18 million in the United States last year. The second highest collection came from Germany.
