The McCain campaign is using the situation well, communicating the subtext of "See? Anyone who runs against this guy winds up getting called a racist."

Obama should have taken a leaf from LBJ's book. After an election Johnson would suck up shamelessly - I'm sorry, 'reach out' - to the opposition no matter how vile they'd been and offer up an olive branch. Obama should have done the same, even if he didn't mean it, but he didn't think it was necessary and now look.
