She has a lovely voice, but what made her an overnight sensation was her appearance. I suspect that few of us would want to be judged by our appearance rather than our other characteristics. I would not mind so much if I thought this story would have a hope of a chance of changing human nature, but it will not. People will still judge on outward appearance and, thus miss some of the most talented and wonderful people in the world!

It's the form of discrimination we still don't talk about.

Well, nobody put a gun to her head and forced her to appear on the show. I gather she's enjoying the attention and she should make a nice packet out of it, too. Good for her.

I don't watch these shows, but it's not exactly news that pretty people have an edge over everyone else. My take has always been that beauty is a gift, like brains, and it may be overvalued but that's how we primates are, perhaps.

(It would be superfluous to point out that Boyle's sex plays a role here. It's unlikely that a plain man with a big voice would incite this level of attention and contempt, in the same way that the clothes and looks of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin tended to receive at least as much attention as anything else about them.)

Couldn't agree more.

This is the first time I've ever watched this program. Are people always this snooty?

I have no idea. I tried watching “American Idol” once or twice and it was too loud and brassy for me. It does put one at a disadvantage at lunch or at the water cooler, I find, because everyone else seems to follow these shows and I have to stand or sit there nodding pleasantly because I have no idea what anyone is talking about. I suspect, however, that the brutality is part of the entertainment, like boxing or football.

I suppose it's a step up from feeding people to lions.
