I have taken the NYC-MTL train before. Part of the reason it takes so long these days is the god-awful border delay. back the 40s all they did was an oral check by asking if you were a Canadaian. The only people questioned were unaccompanied minors.

Now you go through extensive questioning and get your luggage searched. Soon you'll be finger printed by American authorities coming and going. Multiply that by the hundreds of people on each train and you see the mess.

Your point is still taken, but the U.S. is moving in the wrong direction in border management as well. Most of western Europe and Australia/New Zealand are dropping their passport checks.
