We knew it was coming, but still we are shocked. For people of two generations, the Kennedys have been iconic, near mythic. The passing of the last Kennedy brother, whatever you might have thought of his politics, is a watershed cultural marker.
People feel it. Health care reform opponents have pulled their television ads until Monday. Kennedy's book, due out in three weeks, is already a best-seller. His memory is hailed by friend and foe alike.
Given that cultural and political climate, let's say that the Edward Moore Kennedy Health Care Reform Act of 2009 comes down to one vote in the United States Senate. Let's say that you are a Democratic Senator. Would you want to be the one vote by which it fails?
Try explaining that one back home.
