Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, the former head of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, has expressed some reservations about the Marian apparitions at Medjugorge, telling the Italian web site Petrus that it was a mistake to assume that displays of piety at Medjugorje are a sign of authenticity. He mentioned, in particular, that some of the messages from the Virgin encourage people to disregard their bishop.
“The Madonna could not, in any case at all, be anti-hierarchical and incite disobedience...” he said.
