There have been about 100 cases in recent decades according to some estimates. Archbishop Jukka Paarma says there have been about 20 cases in the last 60 years that actually involved clergy or church workers.
The subject is being discussed at the annual church synod, or assembly, at Turku this week. Said Paarma:
”We have tried to take an open and direct approach. The cases are being made public and we are going through them. If a crime has been committed, it will be handled appropriately.”
