Last Thursday, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) ran a full page ad in Roll Call calling for immigration reform, one which provides a path to citizenship for undocumented workers currently living in the United States.
Galen Carey, director of governmental affairs for the NAE, said, "What we say is: There does need to be some workable system that's put in place to address the situation of people that are already here."
Conservatives typically label this kind of approach "amnesty," and it is rare for the NAE to deviate from the party line taken by conservatives.
On the other hand, many of those in the United States illegally are evangelicals. As this Yahoo news report drily notes: "One possible reason for the new evangelical push on the issue is that immigrants make up a big part of the recent growth in evangelical congregations."
