Technically speaking, "empathetic" is not a word. It should be "empathic." No doubt we got "empathetic" as a cross between "empathy" and "sympathetic."
Is "empathetic" a real word? It's like squatting in Peru. Technically, it's against the law, but if you squat long enough, the land is yours. Likewise, if people say "empathetic" long enough and often enough, it will turn into a "legal word."
Like "refudiate"?
Which I take to mean: I refuse to give any reason that would actually refute your claim. I will just refudiate it by slandering you instead.

Yeah, kind of like "refudiate," although I don't see that one catching on as quickly.
