More people left the church in 2010 than in any previous year. Meanwhile, the Pope's coming visit to Germany, and plans for him to speak in the Bundestag, are generating controversy.
“The invitation for the pope to speak in the German parliament is completely incomprehensible,” Manfred Burns, the spokesman of the Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany, said in a statement.
“The Bundestag genuflects before a religious leader who refuses to acknowledge our constitutional guarantees of equality and non-discrimination.”
Meanwhile, reports from various diocese indicate that the numbers of people leaving the church have increased dramatically in just one year. In some cases, membership losses had increased over 40%.
