Metro Denver Habitat for Humanity has now built 425 homes since its founding in 1979. The Denver affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International is now the 9th largest homebuilder in the metro area.
Thanks to Metro Denver Habitat, over 2000 of our fellow Colorado citizens will celebrate Christmas in a safe and decent home, and another 3000 will do so worldwide.
The need is greater than ever. The Denver Post reports that the number of children living in poverty in Colorado has doubled in the past decade. In just the past five years, the number of neighborhoods in Colorado in which 30% of children are living in poverty has tripled, going from 74 to 206.
The "holy hammers" coalition, a group of Lutheran and Episcopal churches, have built 26 homes in partnership with Metro Denver Habitat since 1996, over 6% of the total affiliate production. The tithe from "holy hammers" has also built at least 60 homes internationally.
This year also marked the completion of the affiliate's signature "green" and transit-oriented project, the Bails Townhome Community. Governor Ritter was on hand to break ground for the project, and Habitat for Humanity International CEO, Jonathan Reckford, was present for the dedication.
The affiliate celebrated a 10% increase in donations this year, in spite of the conflicted economic situation. This year also marked the move into Habitat's new offices at 33rd and Federal Blvd. Metro Denver Habitat is also the fifth affiliate to tithe over $1 million for international projects.
Living in the lap of luxury isn't bad except that you never know when luxury is going to stand
