Josh McDaniels is out as Bronco head coach. Bowlen canned him quicker than I thought he would. He's said to be torqued over the team's poor play, of course, but also the recent taping scandal as well. McDaniels apparently did not know beforehand that the 49ers would be taped, but didn't report it when he was told.
Was it last year or this that McDaniels trash-talked the San Diego Chargers? Before the game, he told their defensive secondary, "We own you guys." The Chargers promptly stuffed the Broncos that day, led by their defensive secondary! That was a bush league move by McDaniels.
I liked the trade for Kyle Orton though. Jay Cutler is having a good year with Chicago, and good for him, but when you don't return phone calls from the owner of the team, you can't be surprised when they send you somewhere else--and this comes from someone who is hardly a corporate apologist! In any case, I still like Orton better than Cutler.
Which is why drafting Tim Tebow never made much sense to me. We needed help on both defensive and offensive lines. You expect a first round draft pick to have some immediate impact. Why are we drafting a quarterback who will see very limited action? Because he sells a lot of t-shirts?
Everybody is saying that it will take a long time and a miracle to bring the Broncos back, but that's nonsense. If Kansas City can go from 4-12 to 8-4, Denver can make a quick turnaround too.
Incidentally, for any of the misguided who may long for Mike Shanahan, Jason Whitlock wrote about three weeks ago that the Redskins had quit on him. It certainly seemed so yesterday. The Redskins didn't tackle, ran three-quarters speed, dropped the ball, and otherwise looked like a team that was trying every which way to lose.
