Unfortunately this guy's job still sounds pretty cushy. Maybe not the best spokesman for the cause.

Having said that, the central problem lies not with public sector workers who have it too good (and yes, they do exist) but the stratagem employed by the Republicans of pitting workers against each other, which is working like a charm so far. And the reason it's working like a charm is because the Democrats are no longer a sufficiently powerful pro-labor counterweight and because of the need for financial sector money (Obama plans to raise a billion for his re-election, more than he tried to get for the stimulus) they won't or can't make the arguments they need to make. This didn't start with Obama, but it may well end with him, and what will be left heaven only knows.

The real problem, to me, is the general decline of unions, now representing only about 7-8% of the work force. As a consequence, the Democrats have tilted toward the banks and the financial sector.

It's understandable that they would do this. Unfortunately, however, it tends to disconnect them from the working class and gives even more power and influence to the banksters

For all their problems, labor unions are one of the few remaining brakes on full-scale corporate bankster takeover of the entire US.

I would say the Democrats have a great deal to do with that situation. When in power they haven't done nearly enough to shore up unions and make it easier for workers to organize. Obama couldn't even bring himself to say the words "collective bargaining" the other day.

Hi there -- just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I mailed it to the governor on February 19, and have been amazed how much the letter is getting around. And in part, I agree with Hypatia -- I have one of the best jobs in the world. My letter was not designed to complain about my job, which I love. It was designed to shed light on how public sector employees are being targeted. In any event, thanks for starting still more debate, sorry my letter was long-winded, and thanks again for posting it.
