Adam Himmelsbach and Pete Thamel of the New York Times are bemoaning the demise of the Big East Conference teams in the NCAA tournament. Of the eleven teams who made it into the tournament, only two remain, and--just a guess--those two, UConn and Marquette, aren't the two that most people would have predicted.
Making early exits are teams the east coast media has been singing praises about all year long: Villanova, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Georgetown, West Virginia, Pitt, Cincinnati, St. John's, and Louisville. In fact, the city of Richmond now has as many teams remaining in the tournament as does the Big East.
Not that the Big 12 should crow since they only have one team remaining themselves. Missouri and Texas A&M lost their first game. Texas somehow managed to blow their game against Arizona, and Kansas State put up a valiant, but losing effort against Wisconsin.
