More and more states are opting out of having primaries, which the state pays for, to having caucuses, which the political parties pay for.
Primaries are broad-based elections. Caucuses are dominated by party activists. Increase the number of caucuses and you (1) increase the likelihood of fringe candidates being nominated, and (2) increase the likelihood that party insiders run things, which, as a party insider, is fine with me, but not good for the party or the country.
