Bob Hentzen, a 75 year old Kansas man, has walked 8000 miles to help the poor. So far, he has raised enough money to support 5000 children. His goal is one child helped for every mile walked. Hentzen, a former Christian Brother, began his walk in Guatemala and finished it in Santiago, Chile on June 6. He crossed the Andes Mountains three times.
With his brothers, Jim and Bud, and sister, Nadine Pearce, Hentzen helped start the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging in 1981. The Foundation is a lay Catholic organization that seeks to serve the poor and marginalized of all religions. They currently help 300,000 children and elderly people in 22 developing countries. Support involves food, education, and help with health care.
"I'm not out here to prove anything," says Hentzen. "I'm here to get on down the road, because there are people waiting out there for us." In this photo by Mayela Lopez, Hentzen is in Cartago, Costa Rica.
