Give them everything they say they want--$2.7 trillion in cuts and no tax increases--and dare them to agree to a Democratic proposal. Reid correctly has assessed that the GOP base is knee-jerk opposed to any Democratic proposal, even one that gives them what they want.
As Matthew Yglesias points out, however, none of Reid's cuts come from Medicare, and the GOP has exposure on Medicare. A few months ago, they lost the 7th most Republican congressional district in the nation on the issue of Medicare. They're looking for cover, and Reid's proposal doesn't give them any.
