Haters of the month of August should read and enjoy "August: Let's get rid of it," by David Plotz at slate.com. It's the "Mississippi on the calendar," he says.
Plotz makes a solid case against this dismal month, to which I would add one more: The month of August is named for Caesar Augustus, the Emperor of Rome from 27 BC - 14 AD, whom I don't like because he was a hypocrite--he had an adventurous sex life in his youth, but became a "traditional values" emperor--and because he also had a knack for becoming conveniently sick right before big battles. He became emperor only because his right arm was Agrippa, an excellent commander.
Other than that, Augustus was all right I suppose. He was certainly a deft politician, but nobody I'd name a month after--unlike, say, Patsy Cline or Joe Montana.
wow, if that doesn't sound like george w bush part 1, i don't know what does
