Texas Gov. Rick Perry's "Days of Prayer for Rain" took place back in April, but, unfortunately for our friends in the Lone Star state, it hasn't rained.
Today, Gov. Perry is hosting "The Response" at which he hopes thousands of Texas will repent, and turn to God "with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning," in the words of Joel 2:12.
One doubts there will be a lot of fasting or weeping or mourning. Indeed, what fasting, prayer, and mourning really means, according to The Response, is contrition and humility, but you can safely bet there won't be much of that either.
The event is really about the presidential campaign of Rick Perry, who, obvious to everyone who isn't a social conservative, is using the event to establish his religious right bona fides among the GOP electorate, steal Michele Bachmann's support right out from underneath her, and ride the religious right to the GOP nomination.
Perry invited the other 49 governors, but none have taken him up on his invitation. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said he was going to come and then bailed at the last minute.
Only 8000 people pre-registered for the event which is being held in the 71,000 seat Reliant Stadium in Houston. Perry will needs lots of late attendees to show that he can pull in an Obama-sized audience. If they're interested, they'd better come. The live-stream I'm attempting to watch only works about one minute out of ten.
No word yet on what concessions will be sold at this rally to promote fasting.
