Organized religion has reached a new low of public support. According to a recent Gallup poll, only 44% of people have a "great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in it.
Back in the 1970's, when mainline protestants were running the show, organized religion clocked in at a respectable 68%. People even believed in God back then--over 90% in most polls.
But, after the religious right took the name "Christian" and drug it in the mud for four decades, the public has soured on religion. Atheism is on the rise, and "organized religion" is on the wane.
If atheists give thanks, they should thank somebody for giving them the religious right. Nothing has been more effective against religion than its corruption by those who so piously claim to promote it.
