"Catholic women who have discerned a call to the priesthood and have had that call affirmed by the community should be ordained in the Roman Catholic church. Barring women from ordination to the priesthood is an injustice that cannot be allowed to stand."
National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is a Roman Catholic newspaper based in Kansas City, Missouri. It is a generally liberal-leaning newspaper that features John Allen Jr., Michael Sean Winters, Joan Chittister, and Richard McBrien, among others. This is the first time, however, that NCR has publicly broken with the Vatican on the question of womens' ordination.
The editorial appears to be in response to the recent excommunication of Father Roy Bourgeois, an activist and outspoken supporter of womens' ordination.
