Those with memories longer than a nano-second might remember people making fun of John Kerry's Purple Hearts in 2004, or calling Bill Clinton a murder, drug-runner, and communist--respectively!--back in 1996.

Those who know some history might recall that Thomas Jefferson's opponents called him an adulterer and an atheist, and said that Bibles would be burned if he were elected.  Andrew Jackson's opponents accused him of cannibalism!  He won anyway.  So did Jefferson.

Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post is shocked that 72% of the people can't identify the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

He shouldn't be shocked.  John Roberts was appointed Chief Justice precisely in order to be a non-descript defender of corporate interests, a plan that has obviously worked quite well.

Bring back the Weekly Reader

For one thing, it was better.  The average 6th grader, reading the Weekly Reader, would likely have a better understanding of what's going on in the world than one who reads Newsweek, especially now that Newsweek is going for niche markets like hard right sadomasochism. 

Thankfully, Newsweek will soon be out of business.

"Speaking truth to power"

"Speak Truth To Power" is a collection of moving and powerful photographs by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams. The exhibit is sponsored by the Robert F. Kennedy Center.

The images document courage by featuring human rights defenders around the globe. The exhibition examines human rights by highlighting issues such as nuclear disarmament, children in war, environmental activism, and religious self-determination.

The RFK Center’s "Speak Truth To Power" exhibition, currently at Baltimore/Washington's Thurgood Marshall Airport, has traveled to more than 20 cities around the world since its initial launch at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.  See photos here.

"Unseen, unforgotten"

This photo is one of many photos from the civil rights movement only recently published by the Birmingham (AL) News.  

This photo by Tom Self shows that the face of Jesus has been blown out by the bomb that was placed in the 16th Avenue Baptist Church on September 15, 1963.  

The blast occurred at 10:20 a.m. on a Sunday morning and killed four young girls.
